This detail could probably be highlighted better in the assembly instructions and might address the issue that some of the negative reviews were reporting. Again not tough to do, but you won't get a good flow to the fountain (or no flow) if the holes aren't lined up. The pump spout needs to be lined up with the spout from the filter mechanism, which needs to be lined up with the rubber lined spout in the ceramic top. This isn't hard, its just a detail that you need to pay attention to that could easily get missed in the assembly. Also as a note that might help others, the pump does work well, but you do need to make sure that the holes are lined up to get a good flow to the fountain. Just got it so I can't speak to how long it will last, but the pump is easily replaceable with a standard aquarium pump, so if this pump goes, it can be fixed. Great fountain - once assembled correctly But if you have a little troublemaker like mine, you're going to end up very frustrated and looking for a different solution. There really should be a third option to the would you recommend, because if you have a cat (or dog) that won't try to disassemble the fountain, it works fine. The top piece itself is located more by suggestion than anything, and you can't ever really be sure it's in the right place. It too could be made a fraction of an inch longer, so that it fits positively inside the outlet of the housing and takes the guess and check out of trying to locate the pump when cleaning the unit. Then there's the matter of aligning the pump port with the outlet in the housing with no reliable way to locate it. The outlet port on the pump just misses being long enough to fit inside the rubber grommet in the top piece, which MIGHT actually help keep it in place despite the assault for my little troublemaker, except that the suction cups that are supposed to hold the pump housing to the floor of the bowl, don't always grip very well. ![]() Our other two cats don't do this, so I'd almost give a third star, except there are a couple of design flaws that leave me floummoxed. I'm pretty sure she has managed to shove the whole dish aside once, but usually she just settles for locking the top piece ajar (or off), and depending on how it lands making just as much of a mess - or more because she's got ore water to work with. I bought this particular fountain because I thought it would be heavy enough to keep my 11-pound mischief making tabby from slapping it around spilling water all over the place.
